Founder Principal

Smt. K. Lakshmi is a pioneering educationist and one of the most influential figures in the field of Teacher Education and Early Childhood Education (ECE) in India. As the Founder Principal of Andhra Mahila Sabha College of Teacher Education, she worked closely with the visionary social reformer Dr. Durgabai Deshmukh, playing a seminal role in shaping the institution into a centre of excellence and establishing a strong foundation for women’s education and empowerment.

With a distinguished career spanning several decades, Smt. K. Lakshmi served as Principal of Andhra Mahila Sabha College of Teacher Education for 25 years (1971–1997). During this transformative period, she pioneered a self-employment-oriented teacher education programme in Early Childhood Education—an innovative model that received accreditation from Osmania University and approval from the University Grants Commission as a restructured postgraduate diploma course. This initiative stands as a landmark contribution to teacher education in India.

She currently serves as Chairperson and Honorary Director of the State Resource Centre for Early Childhood Education under Andhra Mahila Sabha, where her leadership has resulted in the development of widely adopted pre-primary curriculum packages. These curricula are implemented across Anganwadi centres in Telangana and the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh and have been recognized for their inclusivity and developmental relevance, including adoption by the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.

A respected academic leader and policy contributor, Smt. K. Lakshmi has held several prestigious positions, including President of Andhra Mahila Sabha and President of the A.P. Civil Society Organisations Network on Elimination of Child Labour. She has contributed to national educational policy as a member of the National Policy Framework Committee on Early Childhood Education under the Government of India and has served on the Academic Senate of Osmania University, along with various academic and professional governing bodies.

Her expertise has been sought by leading international and national organizations, including UNICEF, NCERT, and the World Bank, where she has contributed to major initiatives in Early Childhood Education, girl child education, and institutional development.

A distinguished researcher and thought leader, Smt. K. Lakshmi has led numerous large-scale studies as Principal Investigator, addressing critical areas such as school readiness, early learning outcomes, community-based preschool models, and curriculum standardization. Her work—particularly through NCERT-UNICEF collaborations and CECED (AUD Delhi)—has significantly influenced evidence-based policy formulation and strengthened early childhood education practices across India.

 

Her contributions have been recognized with several prestigious honours, including the Shri L.N. Gupta Memorial National Award for Early Primary Education and the Best University Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. She has also represented India internationally as a faculty member at the Executive Institute of the International Forum of Child Welfare in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

An accomplished academic contributor, she has played a vital role in curriculum development, authored and edited reference materials, and led major national academic initiatives. Her work has had a lasting impact on curriculum design, teacher education frameworks, and training systems across the country.
